As I walked away from the Twistersâ moms, I pondered the last little tidbit of information that Janet had given me, that Brian was related to one of the judges. Could someone have wanted to send a message to the judge by killing Brian? Maybe try to sway a score? At first, I thought, why not just kill the judge, but then I realized if you wanted to control a judgeâs scoring it would be better to threaten said judge.
I needed to find the judge after I tracked down the last team. I looked at my paper, and set off in what I hoped was the right direction.
After twenty-five minutes of walking through the convention center, I had found Team Dynamiteâs area but not the usual parents milling about. Looking at the schedule, I realized I should have sought out Team Dynamite first, as they were competing in five minutes, so they were long gone from the practice room. I decided my next step should be to investigate the judge angle.
Detective Barrett would be impressed if I could find some useful information, and he couldnât be annoyed that I had done some investigating if I was able to help. That was my hope anyway.
I went into the grand ballroom where the actual competition was going on and knew there was no way I could talk to a judge until intermission, which they had in between each division. Normally, the competition schedule ran like a well-oiled machine, with teams up every three minutes, so I took a seat next to the raised platform the judges were on and watched until the break came, hoping I might get some information. I watched the teams while I waited, and when they called a break before the next division, which was Ashleyâs, I knew this was my chance.
The judges got up from their seats and went to the back of their area where there was a table with waters and snacks. I walked up the stairs and took a deep breath to calm my nerves, since I knew this wasnât a place where parents were supposed to be and half-expected someone to yell at me for being up here. Surprisingly, no one really paid attention to me, too busy grabbing snacks, so I took a moment to survey the judges in front of me. I was trying to determine who looked the friendliest and who might talk. I finally decided on a gentleman, probably in his mid-30s, who was smiling as he chatted with the other judges. He looked friendly enough, so I waited until he walked away from the snack table before I called out.
âExcuse me,â I said, and he turned in my direction, surprise on his face. I beckoned him over by crooking my finger, and he came, but was wearing a frown.
âYou know youâre not supposed to be here. I assume youâre a parent, because youâre certainly not a judge,â he stated, looking me up and down, and I wondered what it was about me that didnât look cheer judge like.
